Load Specifications

Various Equipment & components

Application Analysis

General Specifications:

  • 15′ bridge
  • 60′-68′ runway
  • 14′ under hook
  • Options for 1-ton – 2-ton capacity
  • Manual push trolley bridge
  • Powered electric chain hoist

Handling Issues

Client needed an overhead crane to service his tool and die shop where they repair and refurbish their client’s equipment and machinery of various types. Onge had been using a fork truck to do the heavy lifting which was slow and unsafe when moving in and around the other employees stationed in the work area. Production was slow because the floor lift had multiple duties and wasn’t always readily available. On a few occasions when trying to upright or tilt a machine to gain access the load got away from the forks and caused additional safety damage issues.

The Solution

To help the client meet the desired goals ASE Systems specified an Enclosed Track workstation bridge (see complete specifications below). ASE’s enclosed track is highly ergonomic in that the bridge and trolley movements require only one pound of force by the operator to move a 100-lb load. For this crane, only 20-lbs of force is needed to move a 2,000-lb load. Another great feature of the workstation crane is its ease of installation; anyone without experience can easily install these cranes and they can typically be shipped in one to two weeks after receipt of order. St. Onge Company’s goals of increased productivity and safety were met with the enclosed track workstation bridge crane. WSBC series cranes are available in capacities up to 4,000-lb, with bridge spans up to 34’ and runway lengths over 250-feet.

Lifting Rolls Horizontally of Varying Lengths up to 500-lbs

About The Company

Rite-Hite manufactures, sells, and services locking dock equipment, industrial doors, safety barriers, HVLS fans, industrial curtain walls, and more. Known for the development of the DOK-LOK ® trailer restraint that prevents trailer separation, they have quickly gained a reputation for solutions that improve industrial safety, security and productivity through quality and innovation. Serving industries worldwide such as automotive, warehousing and distribution, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, as well as pulp, paper, and packaging, Rite-Hite has a global footprint in providing essential services.

Load Specifications

  • Load Type: Vinyl Rolls
  • Weight: Up to 500 LBS
  • Roll Diameter: 15”
  • Roll Widths: 58”-90”
  • ID: 3”

Application Analysis

  • Pick Up Point: Horizontal from a pallet
  • Rotation: N/A
  • Place Point: Horizontal on a table

Handling Issues

Rite-Hite was using an old pneumatic hoist-based roll lifter with probe tooling for horizontal lifting. They had recently added longer rolls which needed an upgraded unit with a longer probe for easily handling the heavier, longer rolls.

The Solution

ASE proposed a hoist based pneumatic C-shaped fixed probe tool with a powered center of gravity shift to adjust from short rolls to long rolls. ASE also included integration of the clients existing hoist pendant controls; this allowed for increased ergonomics and ease of use, making the handling process more user friendly for their operators. The customer was so happy with the capability of the unit, they purchased a second one for the output side of their production process.

Lift, Rotate, and Carry Loads Up To 365 LBS

About The Company

SKF Magnetic Bearing, established in 1907, provides solutions to reduce friction in rotation across various industries including aerospace, agricultural, automotive, food and beverage, mining, railway and more. Their bearings, seals, and lubrication systems can be found in everyday products used all over the world. Friction accounts for approximately 20% of the total global energy consumption. SKF’s dedication to developing bearing technologies aims to create more sustainable industries and reduce CO2 emissions.

Load Specifications

  • Load Type: Stack of Metal Plates
  • Weight: 176-365 LBS
  • ID Sizes: 6.04”, 7.5”, 9.5”, 10.5”

Application Analysis

The stack of metal plates must be lifted from a crate 4 inches above floor level and carried 3 to 5 feet and placed on another cart in a horizontal orientation.

  • Pick up point: From a crate at 4” above floor level
  • Distance of travel: 3-5’
  • Place Point: On a cart in horizontal orientation
  • Load Rotation: Yes, 90°
  • Ceiling Height: 20’
  • Overhead Obstructions: None
  • Environment: In door ambient temperature

Handling Issues

The client’s handling cycle consists of lifting a stack of metal plates. When the stack arrives at the client’s facility, they are sitting vertical in a wood crate at about 4” from the floor. The stack is lifted from the vertical position, rotated 90° and placed on a cart to be sent to the machine room where additional machining and finish work is performed. After machining, the plates are placed back on a cart, moved back to the packing station where the cycle is repeated in reverse. The operator was having to handle one plate at a time when moving them from the crate to the cart which was taking an unsustainable amount of time.

The Solution

ASE specified a hoist-based air powered ID gripper tool designed to be supported from the client’s existing overhead crane. The hoist-based tool (HBT) included gripper arms intended to grip the stack from the inside dimension and to lift & rotate the stack from vertical to horizontal. The tool utilizes compressed air cylinders to achieve the grip and rotation functions. Attach and release controls are located on an articulated hand assembly that provides additional ergonomic value when lifting loads close to or at floor level. The HBT tool enabled the safe & precise handling of each stack of plates and met the client’s requirement for a quick and easy handling solution. HBT tools are available in capacities ranging from 30-lbs up to 10,000-lbs. Tooling options include ID expanding mandrels, OD gripper pads (pictured below), cradles, forks, hooks and scissor type grippers. This ergonomic lift assist technology reduces fatigue, improves safety and increases productivity.
