Handling Issues

A cylinder needs to be picked up from the cart in the horizontal position and moved to a pallet and stacked horizontally or moved to an adjacent area where it is placed vertical to be inspected for corrosion & resulting work if needed. When the cylinders are ready for use after refurbishing, they either get placed horizontal on a pallet or vertical in a shipping cage.

The Solution

ASE specified an Acer 150 wire rope articulated arm manipulator with vacuum grip tooling & 90°tilt function. The tooling is able to rotate the load 90° for ease of rotating the cylinders and movement from the pick-up point to the drop off point. The Acer manipulator is compressed air powered and is ideally suited for lifting loads in a balanced condition for weights up to 330-lbs. The boom movement is highly ergonomic allowing the operator to exert as little as one pound of force in order to move 100-lbs of load. Through its air cylinder actuated double rope lifting system that is built into the secondary arm of the articulated boom, the Acer 150 allows for flexible ergonomic movements in small working areas thanks to its low headroom & compact size. The Acer 150 includes many safety features including an “Anti Release Valve” that will not allow the operator to accidently release the load until it is firmly supported from underneath. The pneumatic circuitry also includes a non-return valve which will not allow the load to drop in the event of a power loss.

AIS personnel were tasked with handling full sheets of particle & MDF board. Two operators were required to grab a sheet from a pallet stack and place it onto a large table saw & had to maintain a high cycle rate. The Solution

ASE Systems specified a Vacuum Tube (VT) lifting system consisting of an ergonomic workstation jib crane from which the VT lifter would be supported from. The VT lifter also included 4 vacuum cups on an adjustable frame, a control handle assembly for up/down & attach/release functions, a large 30-gallon filtration system and a high-volume vacuum pump in order to grip the semi-porous sheets. The enclosed track jib crane provided the overhead support and the ergonomic ease of movement while the vacuum tube system provided the handling action that AIS had desired with only one operator needed to perform the work and eliminating the repeated lifting injuries. Vacuum Tube systems are ideally suited for lifting semi-porous and porous loads such as wood, corrugated boxes, bags and also for palletizing operations that require a rapid cycle time. The Vacuum Tube Lifting System is a versatile lift assist device that can be configured to lift a multitude of different loads and is one of the most economical lift assist devices on the market today.

Safely and Efficiently Lift 200 LBS Battery Modules

Handling Issues

Advanced Battery Resources (ABR) contacted ASE Systems asking for a state-of-the-art lift assist device that they could add their own custom-made vacuum tooling to. ABR requested the lift assist to be “like a jib crane” but with an articulated boom and include an intelligent lifting device because they needed ease of movement and precise positioning capability. Operator safety in the workplace was another top priority with an emphasis on ergonomic functionality for operator safety. ABR was utilizing an overhead bridge crane and a forklift to handle their battery modules which took way too long to perform the handling task, did not provide gentle handling of their expensive batteries nor did they provide for precise positioning capability.

The Solution

SE Systems provided two options,

Option 1: The Easy Arm Intelligent lifting device.

Option 2: An Enclosed Track jib crane with an Electric Balancer lift assist device.

Option 1: The Easy Arm Intelligent lifting device, enables the operator to move as fast or slow as necessary. The Intelligent Lifting Arm is a combination of our G-Force lifting device and an articulating jib crane. It is an ideal solution if you are looking for a turn-key, plug and play lifting device. You get all the strength, precision, and speed of our G-Force lifting technology and processor controlled electric servo drive system in the body of an ergonomic articulating jib crane. In addition, you get “float mode” which allows the operator to grasp the load itself, move the load in any direction and precisely place the load as needed; with float mode the lifting device follows the operator’s hand movements with the littlest of human effort. The G-Force power pack can also be programmed with a myriad of functions like upper and lower limitations, speed limitations, communications with PLCs, weighing and much more.

Option 2: Considering the customer’s need for a quick turn-around and availability, we also offered an enclosed track Jib crane with a DCBS electric balancer lift assist device that includes zero-gravity capability which is similar to “float mode”. The DCBS electric balancer was specifically developed for handling loads quickly and safely with one hand and includes many of the intelligent functions desired by the client. The load can be controlled easily with the D-Grip Servo control handle. By switching to “load positioning mode” the operator can grasp and guide the load directly with the lightest of pressure.

Handling Issues

The initial challenge this customer had was the large number of light fixtures that ran on an overhanging conveyor which then needed to be packed into boxes for packaging. Their current work method was repetitive and taxing on the operators. Fluxwerx reached out to ASE to procure an ergonomic handling system, with the desire to eliminate the need to perform the handling task manually with the expectations of reducing fatigue, injuries and the number of personnel currently required to complete the tasks.

The Solution

To achieve and maintain the requested cycle time, ASE specified a Free-standing Easy-Arm Intelligent Lift Device with vacuum cup tooling designed to increase productivity and operational efficiency. The Easy Arm with its high speed and ease of movement together with vacuum tooling with its quick attach and release ability exceeds the high cycle requirement. The Easy Arm with Intelligent Lift Device can take a variety of forms, but one key feature is that they are ergonomic and behave like a natural extension of the worker’s arms and hands. The Intelligent Lift Assist Device with its servo motor uses sensing technology that interprets the user’s hand movements into precise actions. Easy Arm lift assist devices are being incorporated in factories and warehouses to assist the human labor force with repetitive, difficult, or time-consuming lifting and moving tasks. The Easy Arm has eliminated back strain and associated injuries that typically result in higher medical costs.

Pick and Place Coils of Hose Weighing up to 125 LBS

Handling Issues

After assembly and testing is completed, the high-pressure hoses are moved to the packaging and shipping station. These hoses can weigh up to 125-lbs with dimensions of approximately 20” diameter x up to an 8” wide coil. Each coil is placed in a corrugated box, sealed then placed on an outgoing platform tuck stacked up to 48” high. This was all being done manually causing back problems and a slow down in production. In many cases multiple operators were needed to lift the coils and place them in the boxes and then lift the boxes and place them on the platform truck.

The Solution

For this handling application, ASE Systems specified two workstation jib cranes, one outfitted with a DCM hoist based lifting device with “gripper hook” tooling to help the operator easily place the coils inside the corrugated box and the other workstation jib crane equipped with a vacuum tube lifter designed to lift the corrugated box, rotate it 90° and place it horizontally on the platform truck. Each workstation jib crane was set up like an assembly line: the coils were carted in within reach of the 1st workstation jib crane, the operator grasping the inline controller maneuvered the large mouth load hook over to the coil laying on the cart in the horizontal position. As the hook engaged the coil and lifted, the coil automatically rotated to vertical allowing the operator to easily place it down into the corrugated box. The box was then sealed and lifted by the 2nd workstation crane with the vacuum tube lifter and stacked onto the platform truck. Where four well-conditioned people were needed to accomplish these handling tasks, now only two are needed, even ones with back or shoulder issues can be highly productive with this technology. Each jib crane consists of “enclosed track technology” which allows the trolley to move with the greatest of ease, one pound of force exerted by the operator will move a 100-lb load; this coupled with the DCM hoist based lifting device and the vacuum tube provided Parker with an effortless high-speed handling solution.

Skyline Homes was handling drywall and sheetrock panels by hand, which required the use of two workers. The long panels are grabbed from a custom mobile Gantry cart on rails (shown below) then placed onto an assembly table. The goal was to implement a more efficient, ergonomic and safe method for this handling process.

The Solution

ASE Systems proposed a Mirus100 Mirus pneumatic Manipulator with vacuum cup tooling. The customer wanted to be able to mount the unit on top of their gantry cart. We specified a shorter Manipulator mast for this request and provided information for the additional weight the cart needed to withstand thrust and pull forces and ensure proper counterbalance.

Safety, precision and agility are the main features of this manipulator. It can be configured with custom-made end of arm gripping tools such as power grippers, vacuum grippers, magnetic grip & a variety of custom forks and hooks made to meet your handling needs.

Each air caster roll mover is built to the client’s roll specifications and makes it possible to not only move all kinds of heavy rolls but also coils, reels and other round loads regardless of the size. Air caster systems require a smooth non-porous surface like trawled concrete that is sealed to operate at optimal efficiency. Large aluminum fixtures weighing 23,000 lbs each need to be maneuvered within a limited area. This task was difficult to perform in the space that was available on standard wheel and caster assemblies, then pushed by fork truck. D-J Engineering needed a system that could slip under the beams of the fixture and be easily removed when not in use.

The Solution

ASE specified one of our air caster load module systems #TS-32-21N rated at 32,000-lb capacity. The system includes four 21” air casters load modules, four interconnect hoses with quick connect couplings and one air regulation control console. The air regulators contained in the control console ensure that the incoming air is properly distributed to each load module even if the load weight is unevenly distributed. The air caster load module system enables precise positioning, side-shifting and omni directional movement of the load. With this technology one pound of force exerted by the operator will move a 1,000-lb load.
