Load Specifications
Load Type: High pressure coils of hose
Application Analysis
Lifting coils to be placed in packaging boxes, then lift and carry the box and placed on a platform truck stacked up to 48” high.
- Load: High pressure coils of hose
- Weight: Up to 125-lbs
- Size: 20” diameter x 8” wide
Handling Issues
After assembly and testing is completed, the high-pressure hoses are moved to the packaging and shipping station. These hoses can weigh up to 125-lbs with dimensions of approximately 20” diameter x up to an 8” wide coil. Each coil is placed in a corrugated box, sealed then placed on an outgoing platform tuck stacked up to 48” high. This was all being done manually causing back problems and a slow down in production. In many cases multiple operators were needed to lift the coils and place them in the boxes and then lift the boxes and place them on the platform truck.
The Solution
For this handling application, ASE Systems specified two workstation jib cranes, one outfitted with a DCM hoist based lifting device with “gripper hook” tooling to help the operator easily place the coils inside the corrugated box and the other workstation jib crane equipped with a vacuum tube lifter designed to lift the corrugated box, rotate it 90° and place it horizontally on the platform truck. Each workstation jib crane was set up like an assembly line: the coils were carted in within reach of the 1st workstation jib crane, the operator grasping the inline controller maneuvered the large mouth load hook over to the coil laying on the cart in the horizontal position. As the hook engaged the coil and lifted, the coil automatically rotated to vertical allowing the operator to easily place it down into the corrugated box. The box was then sealed and lifted by the 2nd workstation crane with the vacuum tube lifter and stacked onto the platform truck. Where four well-conditioned people were needed to accomplish these handling tasks, now only two are needed, even ones with back or shoulder issues can be highly productive with this technology. Each jib crane consists of “enclosed track technology” which allows the trolley to move with the greatest of ease, one pound of force exerted by the operator will move a 100-lb load; this coupled with the DCM hoist based lifting device and the vacuum tube provided Parker with an effortless high-speed handling solution.

- Options for 1-ton – 2-ton capacity
- Manual push trolley bridge
- Powered electric chain hoist
Handling Issues
Client needed an overhead crane to service his tool and die shop where they repair and refurbish their client’s equipment and machinery of various types. Onge had been using a fork truck to do the heavy lifting which was slow and unsafe when moving in and around the other employees stationed in the work area. Production was slow because the floor lift had multiple duties and wasn’t always readily available. On a few occasions when trying to upright or tilt a machine to gain access the load got away from the forks and caused additional safety damage issues.
The Solution
To help the client meet the desired goals ASE Systems specified an Enclosed Track workstation bridge (see complete specifications below). ASE’s enclosed track is highly ergonomic in that the bridge and trolley movements require only one pound of force by the operator to move a 100-lb load. For this crane, only 20-lbs of force is needed to move a 2,000-lb load. Another great feature of the workstation crane is its ease of installation; anyone without experience can easily install these cranes and they can typically be shipped in one to two weeks after receipt of order. St. Onge Company’s goals of increased productivity and safety were met with the enclosed track workstation bridge crane. WSBC series cranes are available in capacities up to 4,000-lb, with bridge spans up to 34’ and runway lengths over 250-feet.

- Place Point: On a cart in horizontal orientation
- Load Rotation: Yes, 90°
- Ceiling Height: 20’
- Overhead Obstructions: None
- Environment: In door ambient temperature
Handling Issues
The client’s handling cycle consists of lifting a stack of metal plates. When the stack arrives at the client’s facility, they are sitting vertical in a wood crate at about 4” from the floor. The stack is lifted from the vertical position, rotated 90° and placed on a cart to be sent to the machine room where additional machining and finish work is performed. After machining, the plates are placed back on a cart, moved back to the packing station where the cycle is repeated in reverse. The operator was having to handle one plate at a time when moving them from the crate to the cart which was taking an unsustainable amount of time.
The Solution
ASE specified a hoist-based air powered ID gripper tool designed to be supported from the client’s existing overhead crane. The hoist-based tool (HBT) included gripper arms intended to grip the stack from the inside dimension and to lift & rotate the stack from vertical to horizontal. The tool utilizes compressed air cylinders to achieve the grip and rotation functions. Attach and release controls are located on an articulated hand assembly that provides additional ergonomic value when lifting loads close to or at floor level. The HBT tool enabled the safe & precise handling of each stack of plates and met the client’s requirement for a quick and easy handling solution. HBT tools are available in capacities ranging from 30-lbs up to 10,000-lbs.
